Universal Free Breakfast Program in Orange County Schools

The Universal Free Breakfast Program is available at no charge to all Orange County Schools elementary students, regardless of their household income. Breakfast is given free to any student who wants it that day. However, our Child Nutrition Services department claims the federal reimbursement at the correct income category for that student, so that a proper accounting of who is served breakfast is maintained. Additionally, if an elementary student comes to school late, that student can still get a grab-and-go bag with breakfast in it so that no child begins the day without a nutritious meal.

The Universal Free Breakfast Program was launched  at Hillsborough Elementary School and thereafter expanded to include all elementary schools beyond the pilot year. The total number of meals served under the Breakfast Program has grown steadily each year since its inception. For the entire 2015-16 school year, OCS served 21,099 free breakfasts. Since the beginning of the 2017-18 school year through September 30th of this year, OCS has already served more than 31,744 breakfasts.  The rise in the number of breakfasts served is a positive reminder in that our students are beginning the school day on a healthy and nutritious first step.
