Board of Education Approves Increase in Teacher and Employee Compensation

HILLSBOROUGH, NC 27 JUNE 2016- At the June 27th Orange County Schools Board of Education meeting, Board members voted to approve an increase in the local salary supplement for all employees. Of all employees, teachers will receive the largest increase in pay. Teacher pay is determined by a set scale from the state, but school districts may compensate teachers with a local pay supplement that is funded at the local level.

“We are thankful to the Board of County Commissioners for their approved education budget to support not only our continuation budget but our increased local supplements for teachers and staff,” said the Superintendent of Orange County Schools, Dr. Todd Wirt.  “Through the leadership of our Board of Education, our employees will benefit from the available funding,” Dr. Wirt continued. The Board of Commissioners approved budget includes additional funding that the Board of Education has allocated for local supplements.

“Our Commissioners have a longstanding history of providing support to the schools, and we are grateful to have the ability to increase the pay of our teachers and staff,” added Board Chair Donna Coffey. Along with funding to support local supplement increase, the Board of Commissioners will provide Health and Safety Contracts for school nurses and school resource officers.  This will save Orange County Schools (OCS) a total of $400,483: $180,000 for school resource officers and $220,483 for school nurses.

With the approval of an increase in local supplements, the Board of Education has prioritized retaining and recruiting the most highly qualified teachers and staff to ensure that OCS continues to provide learning opportunities for all students.
