What is 1:1 Laptop Distribution?
The 1:1 Early Distribution Project provides each rising Middle and High School student an opportunity to pick up their functioning student device before the first day of school.
Where is Early Distribution going to take place?
The gym and cafeteria of:
Gravelly Hill Middle School
4801 West Ten Road
Efland, NC 27243
We ask that families park in the back of the school and will provide signage to direct folks accordingly
Who is eligible?
Any student who is enrolled in an Orange County Schools’ Middle and High School for the 2017-2018 school year. Please ensure your student has officially enrolled at least 24 hours before their pickup day.
The student must be present to receive their laptop.
When is Early Distribution taking place?
Thursday, August 17 - 3:00 to 7:00 for students whose last names are between A and C
Friday, August 18 - 3:00 to 7:00 for students whose last names are between D and J
Monday, August 21 - 3:00 to 7:00 for students whose last names are between K and Q
Tuesday, August 22 - 3:00 to 7:00 for students whose last names are between R and Z
Wednesday, August 23 - 3:00 to 7:00 - make up time for all students
There are four stations each student goes through
Station 1 (cafeteria) - initial check in - student gets a registration sheet based on current enrollment status, confirms name and address
Station 2 (cafeteria) - payment - student pays $20 annual technology fee by cash, check or credit card. Waivers are also available at the payment station
Station 3 (gymnasium) - laptop assignment - student gets a laptop and charger assigned to them
Station 4 (gymnasium) - login - student logs in to the laptop, with assistance as needed
Student leaves with a working laptop and charger that have been assigned to them and paid for.
Why is the District doing this?
The District provides early distribution of of devices so that:
Students can have their devices on the first day of school
Students can familiarize themselves with the device in advance of school
Disruption of instructional time is minimized

Can a family member pick up a device without the student?
No. The student must be present.
Can a student pick up a device without their parent?
Yes. They’ll need to be able to identify themselves and pay the technology fee.
What if a family can’t afford the $20 technology fee?
Waivers are available at the payment station.
Will students be issued backpacks or sleeves?
The district is moving away from issuing backpacks or sleeves. The district provides protections with the rugged design, and the Accidental Damage Service.
What happens if my student cannot pick up their laptop during the designated time?
Students can come on the makeup day, Wednesday, August 23 - 3:00 to 7:00. If they cannot come on this day, they can get their laptop in the Media Center soon after the start of school.
Can I get in line early to minimize the wait time?
People who show up early tend to wait the longest. Last year we estimated an average of 15 minutes for the entire process.
Can I pay the laptop fee early?
It’s easier to pay onsite, where we accept cash, checks, and all major credit cards.
