Scholarship bulletins are posted here throughout the year. Information can also be found in the Senior Handbook.
The Scholarship Process
Scholarship money is available to seniors. However, researching and applying for scholarships can be an involved process.
The first place to look for scholarships is from the school you are planning to attend. Colleges and universities offer scholarships to incoming freshmen, but they are usually very competitive and are primarily based on academic performance. However, individual schools within the college may also offer scholarships that are specific to your choice of major. The best way to start is by visiting the college’s website and then finding your way to the financial aid or scholarship section. All you need to know about available scholarships at that particular school will most likely be listed there.
Private scholarship sources make up a small slice of the total financial aid pie. Nonetheless, there are a number of scholarship opportunities—the trick is finding which ones are applicable to your individual situation.
The OHS scholarship bulletin will be published several times throughout the school year. This is by no means an exhaustive list; websites are listed below to assist with other scholarship searches. Be forewarned—the application process for scholarships is often as detailed as applying for college and sometimes the rewards are not large. The most important thing to remember is to never pay for a scholarship or for scholarship information.
Criteria and instructions for applying for the scholarships listed on the bulletin will be clearly explained. It is vital that students read and follow directions!
Questions about scholarships posted on the bulletin can be emailed to counselors.
Scholarship Search Websites
Remember, never pay for searches or for any financial aid information. You can always get all the information you need for free!
Financial Aid Assistance
Every counselor can help students with financial aid.
Applying for Financial Aid
All students applying for federal financial aid must file the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA is the only application students must complete to be considered for all federal financial aid. You can access this form online at: http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/. Before completing the form, both the student and the parent must have PINs (used to electronically sign the FAFSA). You can obtain your PIN anytime at: www.pin.ed.gov; but you must not submit the FAFSA until January 2nd. Be sure to check college websites for financial aid priority deadlines.
The FAFSA is also used to apply for state aid. However, since state funds are limited, students are advised to complete and submit the FAFSA by March 1. This deadline is flexible, but NC has usually depleted its funds by March 15.
In addition to the FAFSA, many colleges request additional information with their own institutional forms. Admission and financial aid materials will include specific institutional requirements. A commonly used form is the CSS Profile, available at:http://www.collegeboard.com/profile.
Financial Aid Information
Our Financial Aid Workshop is typically held in early November. Check the Senior Calendar for the official date.
FAFSA DAY is scheduled for Saturday, October 28, 2018. At this event, specially trained volunteers offer free, personalized help filling out the FAFSA. Register at: www.cfnc.org/FAFSAday
CFNC is full of information on the different types of financial aid and how to get it. There are also excellent sections on debt management and financial literacy. Students who complete the ninety-minute online financial literacy course are automatically entered into a scholarship drawing.
Scholarship Information and Bulletins
Please check our Scholarships Bulletin and our monthly Senior Newsletters for information on local scholarships. To search for national scholarships, utilize an online (FREE) scholarship search site, such as: www.fastweb.com, www.schoolsoup.com, or (for students with a minimum 3.0 gpa) www.meritaid.com. Do NOT fall prey to a scheme that charges to do this for you!
