Orange County Crossing Guard Nominated for National Recognition

Hillsborough, NC – Mr. Anderson Whitted of Central Elementary in Hillsborough, NC has been nominated by Safe Kids Orange County to be recognized in the national ‘America’s Favorite Crossing Guard’ competition. Sponsored by Safe Kids Worldwide and Fed Ex, the annual competition’s goal is to celebrate the important role crossing guards play in keeping school zones safe for students and families.

Continuing the Community’s Tradition of Supporting Public Education

Students face many social and personal problems that complicate their ability to do well in school and inhibit their progress toward becoming productive citizens.  To promote  success in and out of the classroom for our students, Orange County Schools (OCS)  utilizes School Social Workers, Family Specialists (provided through a collaborative with the Orange County Department of Social Services), and a Teen Parent Social Worker.

Community Support to Help our Families in Need

During the months of September and October, Weaver Street Market in Hillsborough provided an opportunity for customers to round-up their final bill at the register to support Orange County Schools (OCS). The round-ups were collected to purchase food for families to enjoy over the winter and spring breaks. In all, $82,315 was raised during  the two month round-up program, and over 360 families will receive healthy, nutritious food for the winter break.

School System Continues to Make Growth in Student Achievement

HILLSBOROUGH, NC 11 DECEMBER 2017- The North Carolina State Board of Education selected the Education Value-Added Assessment System (EVAAS) as the statewide model for measuring student growth (for example, the End of Course and End of Grade assessments), beginning in the 2011-12 school year.  Along with other sources of data, EVAAS plays a valuable role in the success of North Carolina's schools and students.

Business Advisory Council Announced by Board of Education

HILLSBOROUGH, NC 11 DECEMBER 2017- The Board of Education voted to approve the initial list of the Business Advisory Council members.  The Business Advisory Council will serve the Board by identifying economic and workforce development trends related to the training and educational needs of the community. Also, the advisory council will advocate for strong, lasting local career and technical education programs. These programs will include work-based learning opportunities for students and prepare students for post-high school certifications and credentials for high-demand careers.

Resolution on Class Size Reduction

On Monday, December 12, 2017, the Orange County School Board adopted the following resolution regarding K-3 class size reduction implementation:

Whereas, pursuant to S.L. 2017-9, local school districts in 2018-19 are required to set class size averages in grades K-3 that equal the State classroom teacher funding ratios and will have to meet more restrictive individual class size maximums across those grade levels; and
