Business Advisory Council Announced by Board of Education

HILLSBOROUGH, NC 11 DECEMBER 2017- The Board of Education voted to approve the initial list of the Business Advisory Council members.  The Business Advisory Council will serve the Board by identifying economic and workforce development trends related to the training and educational needs of the community. Also, the advisory council will advocate for strong, lasting local career and technical education programs. These programs will include work-based learning opportunities for students and prepare students for post-high school certifications and credentials for high-demand careers.


Resolution on Class Size Reduction

On Monday, December 12, 2017, the Orange County School Board adopted the following resolution regarding K-3 class size reduction implementation:

Whereas, pursuant to S.L. 2017-9, local school districts in 2018-19 are required to set class size averages in grades K-3 that equal the State classroom teacher funding ratios and will have to meet more restrictive individual class size maximums across those grade levels; and


Superintendent Todd Wirt Top 30 Transformational Leaders in the Nation

Superintendent Todd Wirt has been named one of the Top 30 transformational leaders in the nation. The award is given through the John Maxwell Team, and the selection process is highly competitive. Other awarded leaders come from various fields, including  the Faith Community, Arts & Entertainment, Business, and Social Enterprise.

"It is an honor to be named to this group, and the award really speaks to the great work that our team has been doing," offered Superintendent Wirt. "I'm proud of the work we're doing and look forward to  building on that," he added.


Orange County Schools Introduces Business Advisory Council

HILLSBOROUGH, NC 20 NOVEMBER 2017- The Orange County Schools Board of Education debuted the initial discussion regarding  the formation of a Business Advisory Council at the November 20th, 2017 Board meeting work session. The purpose of the Business Advisory Council is to assist the Board in the performance of its duty to provide career and technical education instruction, activities, and services.


Going the Distance in Innovation Award for Child Nutrition Services

GREENSBORO, NC 6 NOVEMBER 2017- Orange County Schools (OCS) has been awarded the Going the Distance in Innovation Award by the North Carolina Department of Instruction and No Kid Hungry NC.  To be eligible for the award,  the OCS Child Nutrition Services department had to demonstrate that it implemented innovative concepts and increased participation in the OCS Summer Food Service Program. The number of meals served in the OCS Summer Food program has increased in each of the past four years.


Universal Free Breakfast Program in Orange County Schools

The Universal Free Breakfast Program is available at no charge to all Orange County Schools elementary students, regardless of their household income. Breakfast is given free to any student who wants it that day. However, our Child Nutrition Services department claims the federal reimbursement at the correct income category for that student, so that a proper accounting of who is served breakfast is maintained.


Meeting the Needs of our Community: Child Nutrition and Food Service Program

HILLSBOROUGH, NC 13 NOVEMBER 2017- Summer Food Service Programs were established by the US Department. of Agriculture (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) in connection with the NC Department of Instruction (NCDPI) to ensure that children in low income households continue to receive nutritious meals when school is not in session. It is an unfortunate fact that there are students in Orange County Schools (OCS) that may not eat regularly unless school is in session.


Current High School Students Gain More Access to Their Transcripts

Orange County Schools students now have a new and more affordable way to request and send transcripts. Previously, current students incurred fees to request and send transcripts out-of-state. With a new transcript request system in place, students will not be charged to send transcripts in-state or out-of-state. Additionally, the new transcript system will allow for electronic delivery and confirmation of transcripts to colleges and universities that accept electronic delivery.
