What laws must OCS follow in drafting a school calendar?
The NC General Assembly voted in 2004 to mandate that all public schools can start no earlier than the Monday closest to August 26 and end no later than the Friday closest to June 11. The calendar must include 185 days or 1,025 hours for students. Teachers must work for 215 days.

To the greatest extent possible, OCS is mindful of religious and cultural observances when planning a school calendar, while also remaining compliant with NC school calendar law.
