Volunteer

There are two types of volunteers:

• School Volunteers, who work directly with or in close proximity to students.
• Other Volunteers, who support the school system or Board of Education in non-student-facing roles.

The requirements differ based on the level of contact with students.

A school volunteer is an individual who works directly with students or in close proximity to students during the school day or at school-sponsored activities.

Because of this level of contact, school volunteers are required to complete criminal background checks and sex offender registry checks prior to volunteering and may be subject to ongoing screening. Additional checks are required for volunteers who drive students.

An other volunteer is an individual who supports Orange County Schools or the Board of Education in a role that does not involve working directly with or in proximity to students. Examples include service on advisory committees, task forces, or support roles for district staff.

Other volunteers are not required to complete a background check, but must complete a required eligibility attestation.

Other volunteers do not work with or near students. Instead of a background check, these volunteers must complete a Volunteer Eligibility Attestation certifying that they meet the eligibility requirements outlined in Board Policy 5015.

The attestation is a required form in which an individual certifies that they:

• Are not registered as a sex offender
• Do not have pending charges for, and have not been convicted of or pled guilty or no contest to:
  • any felony, or
  • any misdemeanor involving the abuse or neglect of a minor

The form also includes required acknowledgment of Board Policy 5015 and an electronic signature.

Submission of the form is required for consideration and approval as an other volunteer.

Yes. All volunteers serve at the discretion of Orange County Schools. Volunteer status may be denied or revoked at any time if it is determined to be in the best interest of the school system.

Volunteers are responsible for complying with Board Policy 5015 at all times. If a volunteer becomes ineligible under the policy, they must immediately stop volunteering and notify the school system for review before engaging in further volunteer activities.

Yes. Board of Education members who volunteer in schools are also subject to the requirements of Board Policy 5015.
