Volunteer
The Board recognizes the valuable contributions that school system volunteers, including parents, community members, and representatives of local business and industry, make to the learning process and educational goals of the school system.
School system volunteers include “school volunteers” who work with or in proximity to students and other volunteers (such as members of task forces or advisory committees) who provide services, guidance, or support to school system staff or members of the Board of Education.
Instructional and extracurricular programs are directly enhanced through the contributions of school volunteers, and input from volunteers serving in advisory roles helps inform sound policies and decisions by district administration and the Board of Education.
All school system volunteers contribute time, resources, and expertise that assist the school system to reach the goal of providing a sound basic education to all children, and their efforts are greatly appreciated.
Volunteer roles include but are not limited to:
- Field Trip Chaperones
- Lunch and Recess Coverage
- Classroom Support
- Tutors
- and more!
The Superintendent and designees are responsible for implementing and supervising school volunteer programs. Please refer to Policy Code: 5015 School System Volunteers.
*Please note that all volunteers in OCS will be subject to appropriate criminal background checks.
Supporting Orange County Schools students and teachers just got easier with our new volunteer tracking system, Mind Your Business! The new process will make volunteering a streamlined and seamless experience for all users.
For the safety of our students, staff and volunteers, the NC Continuous Background Screening checks school volunteers’ names daily against the North Carolina court database and will alert OCS staff of any new criminal activity. This routine monitoring helps mitigate risk and ensure safety of students, staff and volunteers by providing timely updates on volunteer status. By proactively screening volunteers, our district can maintain a secure, trustworthy environment for students, staff, and families.
Existing Approved Volunteers (As of May 2025)
Any volunteers previously approved (meaning your annual Volunteer Tracker renewal was up to date as of May 2025) through Volunteer Tracker were migrated to the Mind Your Business system as "approved." The Mind Your Business system began on July 1, 2025. If your status falls into that category, no further action is needed, and you will no longer need to renew your status on an annual basis. If you would like to confirm or ask about your status, please email ocs.volunteer@orange.k12.nc.us or call 919-245-4022.
If you are no longer interested in volunteering with Orange County Schools, please email orangecountyvolunteers@mybinc.com to opt out.
