Hands for Habitat
Hands for Habitat Partnership
Orange County Schools & Habitat for Humanity held a kickoff ceremony for the newest Habitat House on November 17, 2022. This project house marks the 14th home in the partnership between Orange County Schools and Habitat for Humanity (Hands for Habitat). Through Hands for Habitat, classrooms at various grade levels throughout Orange County Schools engage in integrated lessons and service-learning activities that focus on affordable housing and the mission of Habitat for Humanity.
The Hands for Habitat Partnership is engaging students in Orange County Schools in an ambitious service-learning project designed to increase awareness of issues surrounding housing and affordability. Hands for Habitat began during the 2009-2010 school year and continues with three main components:
#1 BUILDING
Construction classes from Orange High School build a green-certified home in the Fairview Community of Hillsborough, NC.
#2 CURRICULUM
Classrooms at various grade levels throughout the district utilize lessons and service-learning activities focused on housing issues that affect our community and world.
#3 FUNDRAISING
Schools, classrooms, and Habitat/service clubs join with businesses and organizations in the community to raise money for the construction of the Hands for Habitat home.
2021-2022 was an inaugural year where Habitat for Humanity provided two $2500 scholarships to two outstanding construction seniors, Devin Goss and Ashton Abernathy.
