Student Teacher and Intern Requests

Orange County Schools Welcomes Student Interns!!!

Thank you for considering the Orange County School (OCS) system as the prospective site for your student teaching, internship, or pre-service experience. OCS is a small district that can take time to work and develop young teachers.  We host many students from various surrounding universities throughout NC and the nation.

First and foremost, student interns should work through field placement liaisons at their respective universities. Any student who wishes to seek a school placement with OCS must complete an online application.  You can find the application on the Orange County website under "Apply Now".  You will need to complete an online criminal background check, including a fingerprint background check for pre-k placements. Steps to complete this process will be sent via email. All prospective pre-service, full-time interns, and student teachers must complete this process before being placed in the district.

Once your application is reviewed and approved, we will reach out to you with an appropriate placement. Please know that we encourage you to let us know your requests in the application process as we want to hear from you. However, we can not guarantee a particular school or person for your cooperating teacher.  All of our schools are wonderful places for student teachers and interns to learn and grow.  In addition, we take special care to ensure that you will be matched with a cooperating teacher who is skilled at mentoring young professionals.

We also encourage you to check out the OCS Beginning Teacher Support Page. It is never too early to start thinking about your future, and it is our goal to help you make Orange County Schools your permanent career home after graduation.

Affiliation Agreements

The Orange County School system is part of the Triangle Alliance. This 10-school consortium includes Duke University, North Carolina Central University, North Carolina State University, Elon University, and the Universities of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Greensboro.  The district maintains a standing affiliation agreement with each of these institutions.

Non-Alliance institutions must agree to the district’s standard affiliation agreement.  This written agreement must be finalized before consideration can be given to full-time internship and student teaching placement requests.  All agreements are subject to the review and approval of the Chief Human Capital Officer.
