RECOGNITIONS

Parker at NCGA with artwork, teacher, principal, and legislator

Parker Carroll, a student at Efland-Cheeks Global Elementary School, has a piece of art now on display in the North Carolina General Assembly Youth Art Exhibit, cosponsored by the North Carolina Art Education Association and North Carolina General Assembly. The purpose of the exhibit is to share with our legislators and the public the exceptional creative ability of North Carolina’s students.

One student's artwork is chosen by their teacher and submitted to a select panel of art educators across the state. This year, artworks from Parker and one other student were chosen from among 25 entries in Region 3 (Orange, Person, Durham, Wake, Granville, Vance, Warren, Franklin, Nash, Edgecombe, Wilson, Chatham, Lee, Harnett, and Johnston counties.)

At an opening reception, Parker had the chance to meet with legislators and share her wonderful artwork. Her teachers, principal, and family joined the Board to recognize her accomplishment.

CONSENT AGENDA

Items which the Board approved on their Consent Agenda included the current personnel report, contract amendments and technical corrections, a Fiscal Year (FY) 2024 Budget Amendment, and Final Budget Approval for the FY 2025 Budget.

WORK SESSION (INFORMATION) ITEMS

The Board heard a Strategic Plan presentation by Dr. Julie Pack, Chief Academic Officer, and Dr. Sheldon Lanier, Chief Equity and Student Achievement Officer.

Together, they updated the Board on all four key priorities in the 2021-2026 OCS Strategic Plan. Reporting on data and key action details that support each goal, staff identified goals as completed, on track (still in progress), or not currently meeting the goal.

Noting strategies that are already in place to meet the Strategic Plan goals, staff listed School Year 2024-2025 Priorities aimed to help the district continue to improve on reaching those goals.

  • Priority 1: Teaching Tomorrow’s Leaders
  • Priority 2: Excellence and Efficiency
  • Priority 3: Exemplary Staff
  • Priority 4: Empowering Culture

Read the Strategic Plan here, and view the slide presentation here in PDF, and here on video.

Staff will return to update the Board on the Strategic Plan at least once each quarter this year, focusing on data as they become available to assess the district’s progress.

The next regular meeting of the Orange County Board of Education will be held on Monday, September 9, 2024 at the Whitted Human Services Building.
