Spring 2026, School Health News from OCS School Nurses
Dear OCS Families,
Happy Spring!
As the weather warms up and we head into the final stretch of the school year, we wanted to share some important health reminders and updates to help keep our students safe, healthy, and ready to learn.

Seasonal Allergies
Spring often brings an increase in pollen, which can trigger allergy symptoms such as sneezing, itchy eyes, and congestion. If your child suffers from seasonal allergies or asthma, please consider:
- Sending prescribed medication (per school policy)
- Notifying the school of any severe reactions
- Encouraging your child to wash hands and face after outdoor activities
Stay Hydrated
With more outdoor activities and warmer temperatures, it’s important for students to stay hydrated. Please remind your child to bring a water bottle to school each day
Injury Prevention & Mobility Needs
We’ve seen an increase in minor injuries during sports and recess. If your child has an injury requiring crutches, a wheelchair, or activity restrictions, please contact your school nurse so we can support them appropriately at school.
Outdoor Safety
As we spend more time outside:
- Apply sunscreen before school
- Dress appropriately for changing weather
- Remind students to wear comfortable, safe footwear

Footwear Safety Reminder for Students and Families
As we move into the active spring season, the school health office would like to share an important safety reminder regarding appropriate footwear for school and physical activities.
While rubber clogs (such as Crocs-style shoes) are popular for comfort and convenience, they are not recommended for school use during active play, recess, or sports. These types of shoes often lack proper heel support, traction, and stability, which can increase the risk of slips, trips, falls, and ankle or foot injuries.
Safety Tips:
- Choose closed-toe, closed-heel shoes with a secure fit (laces or straps).
- Ensure shoes have non-slip soles and good traction.
- Wear athletic sneakers for recess, physical education, and sports activities.
- Avoid loose-fitting footwear, including slides, flip-flops, and rubber clogs, during active times.
Wearing appropriate footwear helps support balance, coordination, and overall safety throughout the school day. Thank you for helping us reduce preventable injuries and keep students safe and active this spring.
Stay in Touch
If your child has any health concerns, new diagnoses, or changes in medical needs, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Keeping us informed helps us better care for your child during the school day.
Thank you for your continued support in keeping our school community healthy and safe. Wishing you and your family a happy and healthy spring!
OCS Nurse Spotlight

My name is Christi Lewis and I have been the School Nurse at Orange Middle School for almost 4 years. Prior to joining OCS, I worked in pediatrics for a few years, and for 13 years in obstetrics before that.
I love building relationships with students, families, and staff! My favorite thing about school nursing is that every day is both different and challenging, leaving no room for boredom or the mundane. I also love watching students grow from 6th to 8th grade.
I have two children in OCS—Emme (Cedar Ridge High) and Finn (Orange Middle). In my free time, I enjoy family time, traveling to Maine and Massachusetts, live music, walks, and Durham Bulls games.
I look forward to meeting all of the rising OMS 6th graders in the near future!
