Principal Jason Johnson of Orange High School has been named the 2025 Wells Fargo North Central Region Principal of the Year, one of nine regional finalists for the 2025 Wells Fargo North Carolina Principal of the Year award to be announced in May.
Mr. Johnson received the recognition on Wednesday morning surrounded by his family, Panther seniors and staff, district administrators, Board Members, and members of the selection committee at a surprise assembly in the auditorium that was live-streamed throughout the school.
Beckie Spears, 2024 North Carolina Principal of the Year, was joined by Dr. William Logan, 2023 North Central Region Principal of the Year, to present Mr. Johnson with this news. Ms. Spears offered words of praise on behalf of the selection committee, especially fellow principals:
“We are so grateful because you have said that your goal as a leader is to bring people together. You lead this school with a great big heart that’s as big as your vision for children and for their future. You have created a sense of unity and collaboration and belonging that you don’t find everywhere. And we know that it is your belief in your students, teachers, families, and your community that helps them show up every day, that helps them excel and keep pushing when things get hard.”
“This award reflects your unwavering dedication to people, and to the belief that – together – people who are supported, who are loved, who are nurtured can do amazing things. You represent the best of what a local public school can offer our community.”
Superintendent Dr. Danielle Jones remarked, “I want to thank Mr. Johnson for his commitment to his students, families, and staff and for his dedication to Orange County Schools. Mr. Johnson believes in building strong relationships, creating an inclusive learning environment, and supporting his teachers and staff. This is such a well deserved recognition. I look forward to the continued success of Orange High School under his leadership.”
Mr. Johnson thanked the committee and shared special thanks to his Orange High School staff, his students, and especially his family for supporting his work as a principal. And even though the recognition required a pause in instruction, he said it was worthwhile.
“Because this is not me – this is all of you. This is the Panther Family. This has nothing to do with me. This school was here before me, and it will be here after me.”
He singled out Panther seniors and staff to recognize their resilience in their last four years at Orange High School, his first four years back at the helm.
“The tears you see are tears of joy, and some tears of pain, but I’m very happy that we overcame, we are the Mighty Panthers. We are Panthers, and we don’t quit.”
Then he closed in a customary way:
“I’m going to end this speech like I end every day and every announcement. First of all, take your finals seriously! But with that said, Panther Family – faculty, students, and staff – I love each and every one of you. I hope you have a great Panther day!”
