Cybersecurity Update: NCDPI Restores Canvas Services, May 11, 2026

This afternoon, Canvas — our state’s learning management system — resumed normal operations in North Carolina and in Orange County Schools.

We received this safety update today (May 11) from NCDPI about Instructure, the parent company of Canvas:

“Over the weekend, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) received an interim assessment from CrowdStrike, the third-party cybersecurity firm advising on the incident. The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) has been informed by Instructure that the Canvas environment throughout the nation and here in North Carolina has no ongoing signs of compromise.”

NCDPI began restoring connectivity with Canvas today starting at 4 p.m., and it is now fully restored.

Orange County Schools takes the security of student and educator data seriously. This cybersecurity issue is still under investigation, and we will continue to monitor Canvas and all our learning system environments as we coordinate efforts with NCDPI.

Please remember: Check your sources

It’s possible that scammers, now and in the future, will use specific information about your child to make their messages seem official. In an earlier update, we shared steps you can take to protect personal information for you and your child.

Bottom line: If you are unsure of new communication about your child and cannot verify the source, please contact your child’s school.

For an overview of the incident and the latest updates from Instructure, families may visit the company’s incident status page.

Thank you for your continued support as we work to protect student and educator information and support uninterrupted teaching and learning.
