    Newly-Elected Board Members Take Oath of Office for 2024-2025; Chair Purcell, Vice-Chair Richmond Elected

    On Monday, July 15, 2024, the Orange County Board of Education held its annual organizational meeting to swear in three newly-elected members and elect a chair and vice-chair for the 2024-2025 school year. Returning Board members Carrie Doyle and Bonnie Hauser, each elected to a second term in office, and newly-elected member Wendy Padilla, took the oath of office and were seated. Anne Purcell and André Richmond were elected to serve as Chair and Vice-Chair for 2024-2025.

    Board of Education Organizational Meeting July 15, 2024

    The Board of Education will meet at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, July 15, 2024, at the Whitted Building for its annual organizational meeting and swearing-in of Board Members. The first order of business will be to swear in newly-elected Board Members Carrie Doyle, Bonnie Hauser, and Wendy Padilla. The Board's second task will be for the seven members to appoint a Chair and Vice Chair for the 2024-2025 school year.

    Summer 2024 News and Updates for OCS Families

    All OCS schools & buildings* will operate on the following Summer Hours from June 24th to August 9th: Monday - Thursday: 7:30 AM - 6:00 PM, Friday: CLOSED. In addition, all OCS schools and buildings* will be CLOSED to the public July 1st - July 5th. *Hillsborough Elementary will have students July 1st - July 3rd and resume normal operating hours starting on July 8th.  Read on for more up-to-date news and calendar information.

    Board Approves Halt to Redistricting Process for 2025-2026, Action Steps

    The Redistricting and Student Reassignment process for elementary school attendance zones in Orange County Schools will stop effective immediately for the 2025-2026 school year. At the June 24, 2024 meeting of the Orange County Board of Education, Superintendent Dr. Danielle Jones reported on her findings after meeting with families, staff, and principals, about a process that has been underway since 2022. The Board accepted her recommendation to stop redistricting, based on that review and an analysis of current and future needs of the district’s schools and families.

    OCS Welcomes New Chief Human Resources Officer, Mr. Jeffrey Koweek

    The Board of Education approved the recommendation by Superintendent Dr. Danielle Jones of Jeffrey S. Koweek as Chief Human Resources Officer for Orange County Schools. His tenure with OCS will begin on August 15, 2024. “I am excited for the depth of experience in employee relations that Mr. Koweek brings to Orange County Schools,” said Dr. Jones. “Our employees value trusting relationships and a positive culture, within our schools and the district as a whole. I look forward to Mr. Koweek’s leadership in helping OCS recruit and retain highly-qualified staff who care deeply about serving children.”

    Let’s take a trip back in the past-  It’s a sunny Thursday morning in March and a bus of students travels from school to school getting prepared to deliver some of their handmade products for Disability Awareness Week. Why? A group of Orange High School students in the Occupational Course of Studies Program have been running a school-based enterprise right in their classroom, and for this year’s project, they chose to make t-shirts.

But, for two Orange County Schools teachers, the recognition didn’t end there!  Hannah Scully of Central Elementary School and Chris Lappa of Cedar Ridge High School were surprised with the WRAL Teacher of the Week award, presented by news anchor Ken Smith.

    Class of 2024! Complete Graduation Information for Friday, June 7, 2024

    Families and friends attending graduation for the Class of 2024 in Orange County Schools will want to pay special attention to new information about schedules, locations, and security for this year’s ceremonies. All ceremonies will take place at Cedar Ridge and Orange High Schools; see below for details. Graduation ceremonies will take place on Friday, June 7, 2024, for all three OCS high schools, including Partnership Academy High School. Also Friday, all district schools on the traditional calendar will dismiss three hours early for the final day of the 2023-2024 school year. Families may review emails and phone calls from their schools for additional details.

    From June 17 to July 26, OCS School Nutrition Services will be offering meals for families with children aged 18 and under as part of the Summer Meals Program.     Lifelong Learner Chosen as OCS 2024-2025 Teacher of the Year

    As a teacher for 31 years — all in Orange County Schools — Mrs. Teresa Rogers-Thorpe has relentlessly fostered this growth mindset in herself and in her students. Just one of the main reasons OCS announces Mrs. Thorpe as the district’s 2024-25 Teacher of the Year!  “I have consistently been impressed by her unwavering dedication, passion and commitment to fostering her students’ academic and social growth and her capacity and willingness to share her knowledge and enthusiasm with her colleagues,” wrote Pathways Elementary School Principal Kristin Mattison-Williams in a Teacher of the Year recommendation for Mrs. Thorpe.  Her recommendation continues, “with an extensive tenure of over two decades in the field of education, Mrs. Thorpe epitomizes the qualities of a lifelong learner.”

    Effective Friday, May 17, 2024, Superintendent Dr. Danielle Jones has appointed Ms. Arasi Adkins as interim Chief Human Resources Officer for Orange County Schools. In describing her purpose in the human resources field, Adkins stated, “My passion is in identifying exceptional and diverse candidates and helping to match them with the right position at the right time in their career.” She will serve as interim in her role while the search for a new district Chief Human Resources Officer takes place.

Mrs. Thorpe has been a huge asset to Orange County Schools for over 30 years, and at Pathways Elementary for the past 23 years.     At their May 6 business meeting, the Orange County Board of Education approved the recommendation by Superintendent Dr. Danielle Jones of two senior administrators in the 2024-2025 school year: Dr. Julie Pack as Chief Academic Officer and Dr. Sheldon Lanier as Chief of Equity and Student Achievement. Their appointments are effective July 1, 2024.

    Human Capital hosts professional development workshop for Orange County Schools office professionals

    “I wanted to share some of that experience with the OCS office staff,” Vincent said. “I believe that the importance of professional development for office staff offers skills enhancement, the importance of safety, and a sense of belonging and that OCS values growth and development.” Orange County Schools has a calendar packed with professional development opportunities for many groups, from math coaches to assistant principals, even office professionals. While students were out of school for a teacher workday on Monday, office professionals from all over the district gathered in the Cedar Ridge library for the Orange County Schools Office Professional Workshop hosted by Phyllis Vincent, the district's Human Resource Specialist.

    The results are in and it's official! We are happy to anounce that the 2024-25 Orange County Schools Teacher of the Year nominees are in. We want to say that we are very proud of and thankful for all of our teachers that serve our students each and every day. The district Teacher of the Year will be announced at the May 20 Board of Education Meeting, so stay tuned for the results.
