Orange County Schools News, Events and Updates Oct. 23-27

This week in Orange County Schools, students have a very short week in light of the end of the first nine weeks of school! Read more to find out information about your children's school. 

Traditional School Update: 

  • This week, all traditional schools will have an early release day on Wednesday, Oct. 25. Please be sure to make accommodations for you and your child for the early release. See times for release below: 
    • Elementary Schools: 11:30 a.m.
    • Middle Schools: 12:25 p.m. 
    • High Schools: 1 p.m.
  • In addition to early release on Thursday, Oct. 26 and Friday, Oct. 27 are teacher workdays and there is no school for students.

New Hope Elementary School

  • Fall conferences 

    • If you have not already scheduled your Fall parent/family conference date with your student’s classroom teacher, please reach out to do so! All families should have a conference date prior to the end of October, unless otherwise scheduled with your teacher for special circumstances.

Hillsborogh Elementary School

  • HES is now on Instagram! Follow their new instagram @HESdolphins

  • Fall Scholastic Book Fair 

    • HES PTA will be hosting the Scholastic Book Fair for student and staff during school hours from Monday, Oct. 30 to Friday, Nov. 3 and all students will be able to visit the fair with their classes

  • Literary fair 

    • The literacy fair will take place on Thursday, Nov. 2 and the night's theme is Connections! How can books help us make connections with those near or far?

  • Yearbook Artwork

    • Calling all artists! We encourage you to enter the yearbook artwork contest!! Students’ artwork may be used in the yearbook, on the cover, or throughout the yearbook.

    • Artwork is due on Friday, Dec. 1st, 2023. Turn your work into your classroom teacher or Ms. Spaeth in Rm. 105.

    • This year’s HES theme is CONNECTION! Some ideas to think about when creating your art: building relationships/making connections with classmates, teachers, school, and the environment around us.

    • Use a regular (8 1/2 x 11) sheet of paper in the portrait position (vertical).

    • You may create your art with crayons, markers, or colored pencils. You may also create digital art using the computer.

    • Don’t forget, bright and dark colors work best. So get creative and have fun!

    • Include this information on the back of your artwork:Student Name, Classroom Teacher, Grade Level

Efland-Cheeks Elementary School

  • Red Ribbon Week - Spirit Week 

    • Monday: Wear Red 

    • Tuesday: Decades Day 

    • Wednesday: Pajama Day 

    • Monday, Oct. 30: Hat Day 

    • Tuesday, Oct. 31: Costume Day

      • *No masks, full face makeup or anything resembling a weapon is allowed 

River Park Elementary School

  • RPES Yearbook Cover Contest

    •  The annual River Park yearbook cover contest is now underway!  This year's theme is "Best Days Ever!"  Flyers with directions and guidelines for submitting student artwork have been sent home with students.  The deadline for submitting artwork is Wednesday, Nov. 15th.  Reach out to riverparkyearbook@gmail.com with any questions!

  • “Read Around the World” Event: 

    • Mark your calendars, RPES is hosting the first ever “Read Around the World” event on Monday, November 6th from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. Children will be able to hear stories from around the world to celebrate the cultures, backgrounds, and heritage of our beautifully diverse school community. We are looking for volunteer readers to choose a short book that represents a country and sign up to come read!   • River Park Spirit Wear

    • River Park Spirit Wear Winter Designs are now available for Pre-Order Here!  All Pre-Orders are Due by Friday, Nov. 10. 

Gravelly Hill Middle School

  • Red Ribbon Spirit Week

    • The GHMS Alcohol Drug Prevention Team will be celebrating Red Ribbon Week this week and the theme is “Be kind to your mind. Live drug-free.” Below are the themes for each day 

      • Monday: Wear red/pajama day 

      • Tuesday: Favorite team/jersey day 

      • Wednesday: Grade color day

        • 6th - gold 

        • 7th - blue 

        • 8th - green 

  • Virtual Popcorn Fundraiser 

    • The Double Good Popcorn fundraiser will begin on Tuesday, Oct. 31 at noon and is 100% online and will give the GHMS PTSO 50% of the profit

  • Sports Tryouts: 

  • Athletics Updates:

    • Football 10/24: GHMS vs McDougle (theme: school colors)(5:00 p.m.)

    • Cross Country 10/23: GHMS vs McDougle and Phillips at Phillips (4:45p.m.)

    • No games scheduled for Oct. 25-27 however contact wrestling and football coaches for potential practices

    • Volleyball and soccer uniforms must be returned by Monday, Oct. 30 

      • There is a charge for lost items and failure to return uniforms with result in student-athletes not be able to participate in other school athletic teams 

    • Fall Sports Season Award Ceremony will be held on Nov. 13 from 6:45 to 8 p.m. in the auditorium 

    • All team pictures that were ordered have been distributed 

    • The yearbook is in need of sports photos! Please share them with cristie.watson@orange.k12.nc.us 

Orange Middle School

  • OMS Penny Wars

    • The penny wars will continue through Wednesday, Oct. 25

    • Bring pennies to fill up grade level jars and bring silver coins and dollars to sabotage other grade levels! 

    • 6th grade is the current leader with 8,107 points!  

  • PBIS Celebration 

    • The first PBIS Celebration will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 31 

    • Student who have met the criteria (including having earned 350 points - spent as the PBIS store are still included in the students total)

    • Yearbooks are now on sale for $35 through November 24th, and are available for order online at Jostens.com.  8th grade families only: Would like to purchase an ad to make your student shine in their last OMS yearbook?  Visit Jostens.com for information about purchasing an ad to spotlight your 8th grader by January 31, 2024! 

  • OMS Staff Appreciation

    • Charger families, is there an OMS staff member you’d like to recognize for doing a great job in their day-to-day duties, or for going above and beyond in their service?  Each week, you’ll have the opportunity to use this form (HERE) and on the OMS website to recognize one of our awesome team members for doing great things. 

Orange High School

  • CCP Career and College Promise Program 

    • CCP Career and College Promise program deadlines for students interested in taking college courses early and free of tuition this spring are fast approaching.  If your student is a current Junior or Senior, they will need to have attended one of our few remaining Enrollment Interest Meetings and have completed the application before November 12th.  Interested students should sign up for and attend an interest meeting as soon as possible and can do so at the following link:  https://www.durhamtech.edu/dual-enrollment/ccp-enrollment-interest-meeting

  • OHS Theater presents “Badger”

    • Join us Oct. 26-28 at 7 p.m. for our first production of the 2023-2024 school year!

    • In 1944, four young women take newly-available jobs at one of the largest munitions factories in the United States: the Badger Ordnance Works. Each of the women confronts not only the challenges of entering the workforce in the darkest days of World War II, but also who she is and what she truly values. Unforgettable human stories make the era immediate in this captivating drama.

      • Alamance Community College (ACC) will host an Information Session for its Emergency Medical Technician Program (EMT) on Monday, October 23, from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at ACC in Room B-204. For more information, contact Mr. Montgomery at OHS or Maia Johnson at mmjohnson826@alamancecc.edu.

      • The Army will host an Open House at Fort Liberty on Wednesday, Nov. 8th, from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Interested students will have the opportunity to visit the nation's largest military base, experience training simulators, and meet and greet with Army soldiers and find out about day to day life on a U.S. military base. Cedar Ridge High School

  • First Quarter Faculty and Staff Appreciation

    • PTSO will be providing lunch for teachers and staff on Wednesday, Oct. 25 to show appreciation for all of their hard work in the first nine weeks of school

    • To donate, click here or send a check addressed to CRHS PTSO and drop off at the school

  • Powderpuff rescheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 25th at 6 p.m. and tickets will be $5 at the gate and concessions are available

    • Proceeds are 100% donated back to Cedar Ridge Athletics
