Second Annual OCS Night of Poetry - April 11 at Cedar Ridge High School

Join us for the Second Annual OCS Night of Poetry at Cedar Ridge High School on Thursday, April 11, starting at 6:00 p.m. Students from all three OCS high schools began their spring program with a two-day poetry intensive led by the North Carolina Poet Laureate, Orange County's own Jaki Shelton Green.

At the April 11 student poetry showcase, local authors — including Ms. Shelton Green — will address the gathering and read from their own works. Students will then present poems they have created and submitted for judging. A new youth poet laureate will be named for each school, and one winner will be crowned as this year's OCS Youth Poet Laureate.

We hope you will join us for the event in the J wing at Cedar Ridge High School on April 11! Learn more about the program below.

About the Orange County Schools Youth Poet Laureate Program

OCS Youth Poet LaureateOrange County Schools is excited to partner with the NC Poet Laureate, Jaki Shelton Green, to continue the OCS Youth Poet Laureate Program during the 2023-24 school year. The goal of this program is to provide high school students from Cedar Ridge High School, Partnership Academy High School, and Orange High School an opportunity to explore poetry, develop creative writing skills, and showcase student writing. As part of this program, students will participate in writing clubs at each high school and have an opportunity to participate in a two-day poetry workshop with our NC Poet Laureate, Jaki Shelton Green.

Poetry Laureate Two-Day Poetry Workshop

On February 21st and 22nd, students from the poetry clubs at each high school are invited to attend a two-day poetry workshop with our NC Poet Laureate, Jaki Shelton Green. At the two-day poetry workshop, students will explore what makes a good poem and how to develop their unique voices as writers. Students will read, discuss, and critique the work of other youth poets and National Youth Poet Laureates.

Orange County Schools Youth Poet Laureate Description
