Fall Sports Update
Good afternoon OCS families,
We don’t know about you, but we can’t wait for the new school year and for fall sports!
Fall athletic tryouts and practices will begin soon, and we want all students to consider participating in a fall sport. Our fall sports include: boys and girls cross country, football, boys soccer, girls tennis, volleyball, cheerleading, and girls golf.
In OCS, athletics have a positive impact on our student athletes including opportunities to build and practice teamwork, leadership, and time management skills. Not to mention our student athletes have dedicated time and support to focus on their overall health and wellness.
While we are looking forward to fall sports, our first job is to ensure the health and safety of our students and staff. We are committed to keeping our students and staff safe while providing as many opportunities to our students as possible. According to the medical experts with the ABC Science Collaborative, transmission rate is higher for student athletes than any other group at school. More specifically, research indicates that 50-75% within school transmission among students occurs during athletics. While we have not had any documented cases of transmission in athletics or school among students, out of abundance of caution and in consultation with the Orange County Health Department and ABC Science Collaborative, at this time Orange County Schools will require:
- all student athletes to wear a mask at all times while indoors (regardless of the sport and vaccination status);
- all student athletes to wear a mask at all times while outdoors (regardless of the sport) unless they are vaccinated (vaccinated student athletes do not have to wear a mask for outdoor sports); and,
- unvaccinated student athletes will be required to participate in weekly COVID tests if proof of a COVID vaccination is not provided.
The weekly tests will be facilitated during school and the results will be confidential. We are in the process of finalizing the process and will communicate all details regarding this process with all student athletes and their families no later than Wednesday, August 18. We will continue to work in close collaboration with the medical and health professionals who are well-versed in COVID to navigate this evolving global pandemic in support of student and staff safety and health. We will continue to update and revise our safety and health protocols accordingly.
If you are interested in participating in a fall sport, please contact your coach (at your school) as soon as possible.
We look forward to celebrating OCS achievements in athletics and the classroom!
