New role to support beginning teachers, teacher mentors, and all teachers pursuing National Board Certification!

Please join us in welcoming Mrs. Rhonda Wood to Orange County Schools. The role she will take on is brand new to our district and will be instrumental in serving and supporting three “categories” of educators in OCS. 

Not only will Mrs. Wood assist beginning teachers during their first three years of teaching experienceshe will cultivate and build capacity for each of the teacher mentors who support them, and work side-by-side with OCS educators pursuing National Board Certification for the first time or up for renewal.

Mrs. Wood will begin her role as the Beginning Teacher and Mentor Support Coordinator on August 1, 2022.

With 17 years of experience in education, Mrs. Wood has demonstrated expertise in supporting educators by implementing evidence-based practices designed to meet the varying academic needs of all student learners. Most recently, she worked to create and implement the Beginning Teacher Support program in the Alamance-Burlington Public School System.

Mrs. Wood holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Guilford College. She earned her Master’s Degree in Special Education from Elon University and Math license add-on from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Mrs. Wood said, “I look forward to being intentionally focused on supporting our beginning teachers through their first three years of education. I am very excited to collaborate with mentors and to get to know a new district, new teachers and new students!”

Mrs. Wood is originally from Snow Camp, N.C., and she currently lives on the farm where she grew up as a little girl. She has been married to her “wonderfully supportive husband,” Nick, for 14 years. Together, they have “three rambunctious sons”—Easton, Hank and Lincoln. Mrs. Wood enjoys going on adventures with her family, growing and gaining new knowledge in new things, and working in her garden.

Mrs. Wood will be a dedicated servant to some of our most key players—OCS teachers who are on the front lines every day.

“My favorite aspect of working in education is watching others grow. I truly love working with teachers and building their capacity as they become masters of their craft. My passion continues to grow for adult education with every classroom I step into each day,” she said.

The Beginning Teacher and Mentor Support Coordinator role is a new position in OCS, to provide support for new teachers as well as seasoned educators imparting experience and wisdom to new staff as teacher mentors. 

Another key benefit to Mrs. Wood’s role is to encourage educators to pursue and maintain National Board Certification. Teachers who earn this distinction complete an arduous and time-consuming application that relies on demonstrating mastery of the craft over an extended timeframe. 

With this added support, OCS educators are encouraged to take advantage of one-on-one guidance during the process of both pursuing and renewing National Board Certification. (Another measure of the OCS commitment—the Orange County Board of Education has approved continuing NBCT pay increases through local support as teachers move into Advanced Teacher Roles.)
