Dear Orange County Schools families,
We are coming to the end of Red Ribbon Week in all our schools and across the country—a special time for all of us to carefully consider how our choices have consequences that affect not just us but everyone around us.
The involvement of our local, state, and national partners to help students and families empower themselves has been a huge support. I wish to thank the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, Orange County Health Department, Orange Partnership, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (NC MADD), and so many others.
By showing up for our schools and community during this time, you have helped our students learn a great deal by your example alone.
Nevertheless, events like Monday’s school shooting in St. Louis once again remind us that — having done all we can to make schools safe, and to strengthen relationships between children and those who serve them — we spend every day aware that violence can turn that learning environment and any community upside down in a moment.
Our hearts and thoughts turn with great sadness to all the children and families affected by this senseless tragedy, through loss of life and the trauma of experiencing this terrible event.
What do we make of this? Does something so far away really resonate here? I believe it does, and I believe it must.
Here in Orange County Schools and in places like St. Louis all over our country, families are making time to listen to their children every day. They are taking steps to help them make good choices, and they are partnering with those in a position to make a real difference.
As for me, I am grateful for the generous support available here in our local community. I rejoice that powerful helpers answer the call when it comes. I draw strength knowing these helpers are effective, having seen them literally save lives and brighter futures by their work.
With this knowledge, we cannot — I will not — relax while we have the duty and the opportunity to ensure the safety and well-being of even one child.
Our choices right now — coming together in difficult times, seeking out the good and supporting those in need of assistance, helping every child seize the opportunity of growing to their maximum potential — these choices make waves that ripple back to us over and over again in the life of each and every child.
And to put it simply: we love and value each and every child in our care with the utmost respect and confidence in their highest potential. I humbly ask our staff, our families, and our community to redouble our efforts to be fully present, to show up for our children and for each other, and to dedicate ourselves to making just one good thing happen for a child each day, starting today.
We cannot control the choices of children while they learn how to build the world they envision, any more than we control the choices of adults making their way in the world we have already created. But we can guide and nurture those future adults, and we can encourage them to understand how much better we are when we are together.
We cherish your continued partnership with us as we offer your child and every child a safe, welcoming place to grow during this precious time in their lives. Whether you stay involved by showing up for your family, volunteering or working in our schools, or building up this community in any way, we thank you for that gift of your service.
As we confront yet another untimely tragedy, please remember that counseling services for students are available at each school in our district. Please contact school or district staff who are ready to provide support. Estimadas familias de las Escuelas del Condado de Orange,
Estamos llegando al final de la Semana del Listón Rojo en todas nuestras escuelas y en todo el país, un momento especial para que todos consideremos cuidadosamente cómo nuestras decisiones tienen consecuencias que nos afectan no sólo a nosotros sino a todos los que nos rodean.
La participación de nuestros socios locales, estatales y nacionales para ayudar a los estudiantes y las familias a empoderarse ha sido un gran apoyo. Deseo agradecer a la Oficina del Sheriff del Condado de Orange, al Departamento de Salud del Condado de Orange, a Orange Partnership, a Madres contra la Conducción en Estado de Ebriedad (MADD) y a tantos otras.
Al presentarse en nuestras escuelas y en la comunidad durante este tiempo, han ayudado a nuestros estudiantes a aprender mucho sólo con su ejemplo.
Sin embargo, sucesos como el tiroteo escolar del lunes en St. Louis nos recuerdan una vez más que — habiendo hecho todo lo posible para que las escuelas sean seguras, y para fortalecer las relaciones entre los niños y quienes los atienden — pasamos cada día conscientes de que la violencia puede poner patas arriba ese entorno de aprendizaje y cualquier comunidad en un momento.
Nuestros corazones y pensamientos se dirigen con gran tristeza a todos los niños y familias afectados por esta tragedia sin sentido, por la pérdida de vidas y el trauma de vivir este terrible acontecimiento.
¿Qué hacemos con esto? ¿Realmente resuena aquí algo tan lejano? Creo que sí, y creo que debe hacerlo.
Aquí, en las escuelas del Condado de Orange y en lugares como St. Louis en todo nuestro país, las familias están haciendo tiempo para escuchar a sus hijos todos los días. Están tomando medidas para ayudarles a tomar buenas decisiones, y se están asociando con aquellos que están en posición de hacer una verdadera diferencia.
En cuanto a mí, estoy agradecida por el generoso apoyo disponible aquí en nuestra comunidad local. Me alegro de que los poderosos ayudantes respondan a la llamada cuando ésta se produce. Me fortalece saber que estos ayudantes son eficaces, ya que los he visto salvar literalmente vidas y futuros más brillantes con su trabajo.
Con este conocimiento, no podemos relajarnos — no me relajaré — mientras tengamos el deber y la oportunidad de garantizar la seguridad y el bienestar de un solo niño.
Nuestras decisiones en este momento — unirnos en tiempos difíciles, buscar lo bueno y apoyar a los que necesitan ayuda, ayudar a cada niño a aprovechar la oportunidad de crecer hasta su máximo potencial — estas decisiones hacen olas que se ondulan hacia nosotros una y otra vez en la vida de todos y cada uno de los niños.
Y para decirlo de forma sencilla: amamos y valoramos a todos y cada uno de los niños a nuestro cargo con total respeto y confianza en su máximo potencial. Pido humildemente a nuestro personal, a nuestras familias y a nuestra comunidad que redoblemos nuestros esfuerzos para estar plenamente presentes, para estar presentes para nuestros niños y para los demás, y para dedicarnos a hacer que ocurra una sola cosa buena para un niño cada día, a partir de hoy.
No podemos controlar las decisiones de los niños mientras aprenden a construir el mundo que imaginan, como tampoco podemos controlar las decisiones de los adultos que se abren camino en el mundo que ya hemos creado. Pero podemos guiar y nutrir a esos futuros adultos, y podemos animarles a comprender lo mucho mejor que somos cuando estamos juntos.
Apreciamos su continua asociación con nosotros mientras ofrecemos a su hijo y a todos los niños un lugar seguro y acogedor para crecer durante esta preciosa etapa de sus vidas. Ya sea que se mantenga involucrado al presentarse con su familia, siendo voluntario o trabajando en nuestras escuelas, o construyendo esta comunidad de cualquier manera, le agradecemos por ese regalo de su servicio.
